Hills Absinthe

Two psychologists, Stewart Cassidy, a graduate from UCLA and Keith Novacek a graduate from Pennsylvania State are both in a family picnic. They are discussing an interesting article on Internet about addiction and how is related to alcohol drinking, in other words: alcoholism. They were drinking a Czech made bottle of Hills absinthe of just 0.35 liter. For Stewart and Keith it was like celebrating their graduation because this single bottle costs $23.30 dollars. A luxury drink not everybody can pay.

Stewart supported the thesis that internet addiction is the bare bone of alcoholism, at least one of the most important factors. On the other hand, Keith supported the thesis that both internet addiction and alcoholism had no link at all; he believed that they are just two addictions that can be found together sometimes, most of the times by chance.

Stewart said: “Keith, it is said in the article that such ‘Internet addiction’ does not exist! Come on! I was not born yesterday and I have been practicing psychology for the last 15 years. I think that this disconnection between reality and reporting was symbolic of the general media’s inability to explain the unbelievable, but true, changes that society is about to face. I remember that the media declared 1995 the Year of the Internet; in 1996 we tried to explain it to people. The measure of our success, sadly, may one day be judged by the Internet addiction scare.”

Keith answered: “Stewart, articles like the one in the New York Times can not be gossip; we are talking about the New York Times, Jesus Christ! Do you think that a worldwide newspaper could ever publish no sound articles? Besides, you could not deny that Ivan Goldberg is a psychiatric authority and he said that there was not such a thing, remember?

Stewart said: “Keith, it is clear to me that you are more short-sighted than a mole looking for food at midday, maybe the 10mg. thujone in this Hills absinthe is already wreaking havoc in your poorly celled brain. Internet addiction will be a bone of contention in the near future.” Keith just moved his shoulders up and down like practicing his body language meaning: “I do not know, maybe”.

Keith replied: “Yes, it is true that many people use the Internet for hours on end, but these people are not addicted, certainly not in the way that alcohol (Hills absinthe for example), drugs or cigarettes cause a measurably physical craving. Nor can you compare the Internet’s lure to gambling and overeating fixations; those are destructive activities, and the Net is not. It is said that using the Internet is no more inherently addicting than any other human activity that someone might find pleasure-producing, valuable, or productive.”
