Absinthe The Green Fairy

Absinthe, the polemic, controversial, and misconceived drink that for almost a century was prohibited in Europe, for its supposedly brain-harmful effects. The “green fairy” as it was affectively called when Absinthe changed the lives of many people at the end of the 18th century and inspired important artist and became the emblem of the revolutionary artistic movements of “the belle époque” period. Involved with a cloud of mystery and being demonized for so long, this unique liquor has passed into history as one of the most peculiar liquors. By 1850’s Absinthe “the green fairy” had became so popular and rooted into peoples taste, that “l’heure verte,” was almost an institution in France, but specially in Paris. Drinking Absinthe was so well-liked, that this green liquor was present in every café, bar, restaurant and liquor store in the city, It was the favorite drink, and it was adopted by the artistic community, and became a symbol of “inspiration and creativity” and was so loved among artists, whom made from “the green fairy”, their “green muse”. This popularity started to damage the interests of the winery industry. They considered Absinthe a “very harmful” high-proof alcoholic beverage, which was turning into a social and health problem, and silently started to push politicians to find the way to stop Absinthe’s escalade. It was then when the first medical researches were made, and the misjudgments and false accusations against “the green fairy” started, at the beginning of the 20th century. Scientific findings were published showing that the thujone (a psychoactive compound in wormwood), was a neurotoxin, used in extremely high amounts (these investigations were made with laboratory animals, which were administrated to the equivalent of 150 glasses of thujone and logically, they died with convulsions and brain damage.

Absinthe, “the green fairy,” is now demonized and guilty of all the sins they can find, till it is prohibited in almost all European countries. However, this green liquor survived, and at the end of the 20thcentury, politicians again, make the European community change the laws, and the banning was lift, since it was demonstrated that Absinthe contains very low quantities of thujone and do not represent harm to the health. Absinthe reappearance has turned into a marketing success, young people is trying to experience this green liquor thinking they can also feel the same effects the “belle époque” artists loved so much. However, the truth is that modern Absinthe, “the green fairy” production is regulated and thujone levels are kept even lower than they were 200 years ago, (bellow a 10%). Some versions produced in the Czech Republic, by Radomil Hill, claims to be formulated as the original and contain 100 mg of thujone, but it could be just a marketing trick to make people buy this brand.
